The Taj Mahal – a Symbol of India – a Monument to Love

A true masterpiece of a great passion, this architectural jewel was built by Shah Jahan in the 17th century. The ”Ruler of the World“ is betrothed as a young prince to Mumtaz Mahal. She becomes the ”Chosen One of the Palace“. Whilst heavily pregnant, she accompanies her husband on one of his military campaigns, but she does not survive the birth of her 14th child, and dies. Her husband Shah Jahan is so stricken with grief that his beard is said to have gone white overnight. On her deathbed Mumtaz Mahal utters her final wish for a shrine to surpass all others the world has ever seen. And so it came to pass that 20,000 workers and 1,000 elephants in a span of 11 years constructed a mausoleum as a symbol of his love to his wife on the banks of the Yamuna River. A true “love poem in stone”, with the most precious materials and is considered the most perfect monument ever produced by human hand.
